What causes black lines on laptop screen?

Thin black lines on a laptop screen have three causes, and where the line is tells you which.

Test it now

Full-screen white, then each colour. Panel lines stay identical on every colour. Tilt the lid slowly: lines that move, change or vanish are the cable. Then the external monitor: clean picture outside means the fault is inside the laptop's display.

What it is

Thin black lines on a laptop screen have three causes, and where the line is tells you which. A single vertical line the full height of the screen, one pixel wide, is a failed column driver in the panel or a broken track in the panel's flex connector. Horizontal lines, or a band of lines that flickers, are the display cable through the hinge, or the panel's row driver. Several lines that appeared after a drop or after the lid was pressed are a cracked panel. Lines that are also on an external monitor are the graphics chip or driver, not the screen.

Can it be fixed?

Cable lines: yes, a small repair. Driver or graphics: often, free. Panel lines: no — the panel is replaced, and lines from pressure or a crack are not covered by warranty. Lines with no impact damage that appear on their own usually are.

What to do

  1. External monitor check.
  2. Lid-tilt check for the cable.
  3. If the lines are on the external monitor too, reinstall the graphics driver.
  4. Cable repair, or a panel quote; photograph the lines on white for a warranty claim.

What a repair costs

United States$100–300 for a new panel (parts $50–150 plus labour); budget and 1080p panels at the low end, touch and high-refresh panels at the high end
India₹3,000–8,000 for a new panel at an independent repair shop; ₹6,000–15,000 at the brand service centre

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
