Why is my laptop screen white?
A screen that is fully white — the backlight is on but there is no image — means the panel is getting power but no picture data: the display cable is disconnected or broken, the panel's driver board has failed, or the graphics chip has stopped sending a signal.
Test it now
The test cannot draw on a screen that shows only white. Plug in an external monitor: a normal picture there proves the laptop is running and the fault is the internal display path. Gently tilt the lid — any flicker of an image means the cable.
What it is

A white screen that appears only after a drop or a knock is the panel. White with faint lines or blocks is the panel driver; a clean, even white is more often the cable. Can it be fixed?
Sometimes. A loose or broken cable is a small repair. A failed panel driver or a cracked panel means a new panel. A graphics chip fault means the motherboard.
What to do
- External monitor check first — it also lets you back up your files.
- Lid-tilt check; any flicker of the picture means the cable.
- Hold the power button 15 seconds to force a restart, then try again; a crashed driver can leave a white screen.
- Cable repair, or a panel quote if it followed a drop.

Warranty
Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
